Appearance of Skin After Liposuction

Board certified plastic surgeons in the United States use safe and effective liposuction procedures for the removal of fat from different parts of body. However, there are many candidates who feel concerned about surgical scars and appearance of skin after a liposuction surgery.

It needs to be understood that the appearance of skin after any liposuction procedure depends upon the skin’s elasticity. Skin that has good elasticity appears very smooth and natural after liposuction. If the plastic surgeon uses the right procedures for liposuction, even skin with poor elasticity can appear supple and more youthful after the treatment. If skin elasticity is poor, especially for old people, liposuction in some areas of the body (such as the inner thighs or upper abdomen) may show some degree of skin wrinkling. The degree of wrinkling after liposuction procedures is approximately the same as one might expect on losing the same amount of fat from the area by dieting.

The cannulas used for liposuction make small tunnels in the fat, and leave multiple attachments between the skin and the underlying muscle tissue. These fibrous connections contract during the healing process after treatment and maintain the skin in its natural position. For people with have a healthy and supple skin, tumescent liposuction does not result in excessive folds of skin.

Abdominal liposuction dramatically improves the appearance of the abdomen. By eliminating the heavy fat that causes abdominal sagging, liposuction allows the skin’s natural elasticity to retract and elevate the skin. To prevent abdominal sagging after a liposuction procedure, the skin should have some elasticity or there must be some subcutaneous abdominal fat that can be removed by liposuction.

Scars are not a common problem with modern liposuction procedures that involve very small cannulas (microcannulas) and thus only very small incision are made by the surgeon. Most of the liposuction scars are temporary and fade or disappear with time. Visible scars are more likely only when large liposuction cannulas are used, and in patients who already have darkly pigmented skin.
