Deciding a Breast Implant Shape: Round vs. Teardrop

Pope Plastic Surgery Center - ASPS Member Surgeon

When undergoing a breast augmentation, there are several variables to consider as a patient: size, material, cost and recovery are just a few. Your plastic surgeon will walk you through the process, but it’s also important to be informed, so you know not only what questions to ask but also which ones may be asked of you.

One of the most commonly overlooked decisions is the shape of the implant itself. While it’s very important to make a decision based on the professional opinion of someone like Orlando plastic surgeon Dr. George Pope, you should go into your initial consultation armed with at least some background knowledge.

There are two options to choose from when deciding on the shape of your breast implants, whether they be saline or silicone:

  • Round implants give women the “Victoria Secret” look, providing both lift and fullness. This is the most commonly requested shape, likely since the enhanced cleavage allows for a more pleasing silhouette post-surgery. The major downfall of a round implant is its somewhat artificial appearance.
  • Teardrop implants are contoured and considered the most anatomically realistic, as they’re shaped like a natural breast. They create a slope shape when placed over the chest muscle. A teardrop implant is more difficult to place and requires more time and skill in surgery than the round implant. Specialized training is required before a plastic surgeon is eligible to place the teardrop implant making the teardrop implant surgery more costly than the traditional round implants.  Many women are open to the cost in order to have a naturally shaped breast.

Ultimately, this is a decision that should be made during the consultation process with your plastic surgeon, who can recommend what shape implant to use based on what you’re looking for and what would look best given your specific anatomy.
