Earlier this week, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons* released 2010’s cosmetic surgery statistics, and it looks like the number of people getting plastic surgery is on the rise, which we think is a pretty good indicator of a rebounding economy.
In 2010, there were 13.1 million cosmetic plastic surgery procedures, which is a 5 percent increase from 2009.
“… As the aging population continues to grow, people are investing in plastic surgery procedures to help stay competitive in the workplace,” said ASPS President, Phillip Haeck, MD.
The top five surgical procedures in 2010 were:
- Breast augmentation (296,000)
- Nose reshaping (252,000)
- Eyelid surgery (209,000)
- Liposuction (203,000)
- Tummy tuck (116,000)
All indicators point to the fact that there is a newfound demand for plastic surgery. People are willing to spend money again to look their best and feel confident about themselves. And after the past few years, who would blame them?
Here are a few more 2010 statistics on the top non-surgical procedures/injectables. Again, Botox tops the list. In fact, Botox was up 12 percent last year–and fat injections went up by 14 percent:
- Botulinum toxin type A (5.4 million)
- Soft tissue fillers (1.8 million)
- Chemical peel (1.1 million)
- Laser hair removal (938,000)
- Microdermabrasion (825,000)
