Given a number of both external and internal factors such as age, genetics, excessive consumption of alcohol, smoking, sun damage, pollution, stress, and nutritional deficiencies, our facial skin begins to show visible signs of damage in the form of wrinkles and fine lines.

Although, there are a plethora of expensive cosmetic and beauty products available in the market nowadays, they are largely inefficient in restoring the youthful radiance and firmness of your skin once the damage is done. In order to obtain a long lasting solution for your sagging and wrinkled skin, you can opt to undergo a cosmetic procedure known as a traditional facelift.

What is a Traditional Facelift?

A traditional facelift is a highly preferred and effective surgical procedure that involves lifting and tightening the skin and the superficial muscular aponeurotic system or SMAS. It also helps to reconstruct and realign the neck muscles.

A traditional facelift will address the issues of various problem areas such as the cheek, forehead, and neck, and can be performed in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures such as facial implants, soft tissue augmentation, resurfacing, and wrinkle-reduction through dermal fillers as well.

In some cases, liposuction will also be incorporated as an auxiliary procedure for removing excess fat from specific areas such as the chin or cheeks. In addition to tightening and contouring the skin tissues, a traditional facelift can also be used to smoothen out deep facial folds and enhance the overall texture and tone of the skin.

How is the Traditional Facelift Performed?

The traditional facelift procedure involves the administration of general anesthesia. Your surgeon will begin the procedure by making a surgical incision within the hairline region near the temples. The incision will extend around the ear and up to the lower scalp.

The fat tissue and muscle tissue inside the skin will be reconstructed or redistributed along the face, jaws, or neck region. This will help lift the deep skin tissues. The skin will then be returned to its original position while trimming away the excess loose skin. The operated area is dressed with skin adhesives or sutures and left to heal.

If the lift has to be performed on the neck area as well, a second incision can be made under the chin. Since the incision lines are concealed within the hairline, the scars are almost invisible and the healed skin appears natural.

What is the Recovery Period Like?

Although, there will be mild pain and swelling after the surgery, it can easily be treated with cold compresses and prescription medications that your doctor will recommend. You will need to restrict any strenuous activities for a few days and keep your head elevated while lying down in bed. Your recovery time will take about two weeks.

When performed by an experienced professional, a traditional face lift doesn’t only produce excellent visible results in terms of a healthier looking skin, but also helps you look years younger than your actual age.
